Walking… an underrated exercise

Walking is the most underrated form of exercise

Walking may be one the most effective tools for weight loss, generalized health and disease prevention.

Walking provides:

  • Strengthening of muscles
  • Bone health
  • Cardiovascular (heart) health
  • Joint support
  • Immune system support

Movement (walking) activates muscles and moves our joints, helping us stay mobile, particularly as we age. Movement of our joints allows them to stay lubricated which allows them to remain strong and prevent the development of pain. Walking has also been shows to reduce the risk of heart failure and heart disease.

Walking is a great way to burn calories throughout the day. Calories are burned even in doing small simple tasks such as walking in and out of the grocery store, walking up/down stairs, walking around inside an office building while at work, just to name a few.

Increasing daily steps and daily activity is an easy way to start seeing a difference in your health and your weight. Some very simple ways to increase you daily steps can include:

  • Park further from the entrance of a store/activity
  • Perform household chores
  • Work in the yard/garden
  • Take the stairs rather than an elevator
  • Take a walk (even a short one) on your lunch break
  • Walk around your neighborhood

Taking a daily stroll and increasing your daily steps can also provide benefits for your mental health. The benefits to your mental health from walking include:

  • Decreased anxiety
  • Lower risk of depression
  • Decrease in negativity
  • Elevated mood and attentiveness
  • Increase in self-confidence
  • Better sleep

Have you noticed mid-day fatigue? An easy way to reduce this and boost your energy is to take a walk. Even if it’s only for 15 minutes, you will notice an energy boost that will get you through the rest of the day. No need to reach for that cup of coffee or energy drink. Make a healthier choice with a short walk.

Another wonderful benefit of walking is that it doesn’t cost more than a pair of comfortable shoes!

Make a commitment to yourself and your wellness to start adding more steps in your day!
