How does Semaglutide work for weight loss?
Semaglutide, more commonly known as Ozempic or Wegovy, has been FDA approved for weight loss. Its original use was for those with diabetes to lower their blood sugars but significant weight loss was also observed with patients taking this medication. This medication works by improving glycemic control. It does this by increasing glucose-dependent insulin synthesis from the pancreas in the presence of elevated glucose (sugar).
What does all this mean?
Semaglutide helps release insulin, which is an important component of the metabolism of excess sugar in the blood. As we age, we often have decreased insulin-sensitivity, (also known as insulin resistance) which causes any excess sugar to get stored as fat. We often store this excess fat around our abdomen. An increase in abdominal fat can correlate with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and the development of diabetes.
Semaglutide is often given as a subcutaneous injection once a week. Your subcutaneous tissue is the deep layer of your skin, or your fatty tissue, above the muscle. The needles used for subcutaneous injections are much smaller than those used for injections in the muscle, or needles used for blood draws.
How much weight can I lose?
- Many patients lose up to 20% of their body weight in the first few months of treatment. This is best achieved along with a proper diet and exercise plan.
- Semaglutide can be used short-term to achieve weight loss goals and/or long-term for weight loss management
