How does Botox work?
Are you bothered by the lines around your eyes when you smile? Have you noticed the lines across your forehead in photos? Are you tired of having to raise your eyebrows when you apply your eyeliner and eyeshadow?
Botox is short for botulinum toxin, which is a neurotoxin that softens muscle contractions. It is FDA approved for cosmetic treatment to relax facial muscles and eliminate wrinkles. Muscle contractions in the face over time cause wrinkles in the skin. Botox can be used to soften these wrinkles and relax the muscles of the face for a more youthful appearance. Botox has a temporary effect lasting approximately 3-4 months. However, with regular treatment the wrinkles will become less pronounced. Botox can be used around the eyes, forehead and around the mouth to treat fine and dynamic wrinkles.
Results can be seen within 5-7 days of treatment with total effect seen around two weeks after treatment. The procedure is relatively painless and has no down time after the procedure. Depending on the number of areas being treated, a treatment can take as little as 10 minutes. Botox is administered using a very small needle and therefore associated with very little side effects or complications. The patient may experience temporary bruising and swelling that resolve with conservative treatment (ice).
